Hippie hippie shake

Confession: I've been one lazy girl. For months, I've been meaning to sort through my closet and redecorate my bedroom with some proper "spring" cleaning, but spring is long gone, summer is slipping away, and I've done close to nothing. My excuse? Starting a new full-time job in April. Truth: I just don't feel motivated. What's the point in keeping a tidy room when you only use it for sleep? Right? But I have been meaning to give my wardrobe a thorough evaluation and make room for my summer finds... out with the old, in with the new. As I fill up bags of garments to donate or consign, there are always those items that I'm on the fence about. This maxi skirt is one of them:

Ahhh. My hippie skirt. Supersoft cotton, crocheted detailing, a frou-frou tulle hem?!? This skirt has it all. It's the first thing I ever purchased from Urban Outfitters. It was priced something ridiculous, like in the $100 range, and I couldn't justify a three-digit price tag for such a whimsical piece. I mean, it's fun, but not exactly a long-term investment. Then I watched it drop to $75. Then $49.99. I think that's when I snapped it up, then cringed over the coming weeks as it went to $29.99, then $14.99... and, of course, my size was still in stock. I guess not everyone fell for it as hard as I did!

And five or six years later... we're still together. A summer fling that turned into lasting love, if you will. This skirt has been everywhere with me. It even served as a pretty awesome Halloween costume one year; I was "Halfway Cinderella," and my ballgown was on its way back to tatters. I thought this skirt, with its color, woho-chic style and, of course, tulle, had that very "riches to rags" peasant-princess look I was going for.

So the skirt might not have been the most pragmatic purchase ever, and it certainly doesn't go with everything in my wardrobe, but I just can't let go. In the summer, I live in maxi dresses and skirts. Not that trends matter so much, but I'm happy to see longer lengths come back into fashion. I heard a designer describe this fall's major look as "seventies-chic lady" (or, as Free People dubbed it, "seventies groupie") and I'd like to think that sums up my aesthetic. At least, for today. Or maybe it's just "Stevie Nicks decided to introduce pastels into her wardrobe for once." That could work, too.

And oh, yes, I wore this very outfit to the office (but added a cardigan for modesty and warmth!). Most people in my office wear jeans. I like to shake things up.

Behold, "Seventies Groupie"! I so can't wait to copy this Free People look in the fall:

How do you feel about the maxi-length's return? Was it long-awaited for you, or are you ready for it to just go away?

Amethyst

Happy hump day! I can't believe another February week is flying by, and next week we'll be in March! I'm ecstatic; winter is almost over!

Sunday was a bright, sunshine-y day that made it feel like we were on the cusp of spring. It was also my mother's birthday. I made black bean soup (super-spicy, just how we like it!), and we had cupcakes for dessert. Yum!

Here are a few snaps my "guest photographer" took around the house. Thanks, Mom!

Dress, scarf, tights, belt: Loft
Sweater: Kohl's
Bag: H&M (gift)
Locket: vintage
Bracelet: Apt. 9 (gift)
Shoes: Zigi Soho (DSW)

This knit dress is my favorite LBD. It's a great base dress with some simple attributes: a scoop neck (goes with everything), a banded waist, pleats, and pockets (hard to make out in these photos, though). I nabbed it last summer for a song. I like to infuse such a basic dress with a generous dose of hippie styling. A fringed bag, tapestry print scarf, and boho-rock heels are the way to go.

I usually wind up wearing purple on my mom's birthday, since amethyst is her birthstone (and purple is my favorite color, anyway). These eggplant-hued tights go with everything! Totally.

It should be noted that my mom shares a birthday with Jennifer Love Hewitt. We love her on Ghost Whisperer (mostly for her vintage dresses and nighties, and her gravity-defying false lashes). So happy belated b-day, J. Lo Hew!

The hurrier I go, the behinder I get

Readers, bloggers, fellow insomniacs,

You have my apologies, once again. I admit that I'm terrible at this media known as style blogging. Am I a decent writer? Yes. (I do like to think so.) Are my outfit posts passably trendy and cute from a distance? Sometimes. Sure. But when it comes to daily posting, I might as well throw in the proverbial, plush fashion-y towel and yield to the goddesses of the fashion blogging world. You know who you are. I yield! There! I'm... not sure that did anything, really.

This is why I shouldn't post late at night.

But when I come home from my play rehearsals, I always get weird. Kind of hyper, kind of anxious, and verrrry silly. Being around musical theater people does that (drama queens, do back me up). For example, upon exiting our rehearsal space earlier and stepping outside into the Indian summer night (because summer officially ended as of yesterday, and today decided to reach a high of 80 degrees just for spite), I took a deep breath and exclaimed, "Fresh air!" To which a co-star chimed in, "Times Square!" So then of course, I had to sing the rest: "New York is where I'd rather stay; I get allergic smelling hay. I just adore a penthouse view! Darling, I love you, but give me Park Avenue..."

Which is particularly true, in my case.

So! That brings me to New York. Yes. I was just there, and it was sooo hard to leave my hometown. I get all teary-eyed. And sadly, I wasn't around for Fashion Week... in fact I missed it because I was sans laptop and any internet access (aside from Paige loaning me her iPhone. She's the coolest). I STILL have massive catching up to do. And I will. Promise.

Now we're already in the throes of London Fashion Week which, in my humble little schoolgirl opinion, is far more interesting than New York's (Sacrilege? Sorry!). I plan to track the new collections there as well.

And speaking of Fashion Week across the pond, look who got to skip class to attend Burberry's Spring 2010 show:Its gamine-chic spokeswoman, of course! You know you've got clout when you can blow off school for a fashion show... and blow off Brown, no less. And I thought I was cool as a senior for cutting class to go see that CGI Ninja Turtles movie with Jess. See, EmWats? We're so alike!

Ahem. Anyway, I do have lots of catching up to do. I took a few photos during my trip, but it was rainy so there aren't any outdoor shots... and I'm not particularly fond of the indoor shots. So maybe these are photos that won't see the light of day. We shall see. For now I offer a few funny pics of me trying to be extra fashion-y (that's my new Teen Vogue word!)... in my backyard. In coastal New England. Because that's obviously the coolest place to dress like a downtown hipster. In tie-dye. Duh.And for once, I didn't crop or edit anything. These are unadulterated digital snaps taken around twilight a few weeks ago, before one of my first rehearsals. Yes... that's how behind I am on my photo uploads. Whoopsies. So, because it's late and I'm that lazy, you get to see lots and lots of backyard, garden and fence. I reckon you'll forgive me if I post another photo of my cat...... and what I'd look like without a head...And details! Actually, I loathe showing details. Now you can see how obnoxious that tie-dye print is up close... not to mention my "bling." Plus because my camera, or Windows, or Blogger, or someone, is stupid, close-up pictures like these are always disgustingly huge. Ugh.

But I think I'm really onto something with this tie-dye thing. And it's not just for summer... it's sticking around for fall. Just look at Serena!Yeah. Edgy. (By the way, I always feel slightly better about some of my more bizarre, boho-inspired sartorial choices when I look at Serena. Or Kate Moss.)
C'mon, people now. Can't we all be hippies? No? Well, not if you're wearing Blair's shoes.

As if this post couldn't get anymore ridiculous (read: epic!), I've decided to add a dumb-dumb poll. Because, why not?

So. Tell me. Who's the cutest here?

Out with the old, in with the new

"He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has." - EpictetusMy apologies for lack of updates! The past week-plus has been busy and my house is happily full and bustling. My grandmother has been staying with us (she trades the Floridian heat for New England unpredictability every summer), and last week my (adorable!) younger cousin Paige from New York came as well. And today my dearest friend Emily, also from NY, arrived for her annual visit. We love to shop together and spend hours perusing our favorite stores, from H&M to Urban Outfitters and many in between, but this year we've promised one another that we'll be good (ha). Our plan is to hit up Boston's best vintage and consignment shops and do our best to minimize any damage. ;)

Lately I've tried (tried!) to stay out of stores, or at least steer clear of anything but sale racks. When all else fails, I go shopping in my closet. I'm really learning to reinvent what I've got and have had a blast rediscovering a few old gems. It's also helped me root through my precious junk (I'm the worst pack rat!) and find a few items (okay, four bags full!) to consign.

Here, a few new (sale) finds paired with old favorites.

Everything in this photo, sans my trusty Forever 21 leggings, is new to my wardrobe this summer. How indulgent! But does it really count as new clothes shopping when someone else is footing the bill? ;) My mama purchased the big, beautiful white bag (the saleslady said she thought it looked like a marshmallow, and I've since nicknamed it as such) from Kohl's, along with the cute sweater/vest (she also bought me one in turquoise). The whopping price tag for both vests? $7.20! I popped this one atop my new turqouise eyelet babydoll from the Gap; I watched it go on sale from around $60 to $13.99. Steal! And you may remember my clearance Target gladiators. I'm obsessed with these and probably wear them way too often, already. As evidenced here...

This black linen dress is also from Target. I've had it for so long, I don't even remember when I bought it. My favorite features are the drawstring empire waist and - hello! - pockets. It's so easy to dress up or down, I even wore it to a wedding once. With my new gladiators and some wooden beaded jewelery, it feels fresh and sort of urban-safari.

The African animals necklace was borrowed from my mom. She's a kindergarten teacher, can you tell?

Lately I've found it easier than ever to let go of several beloved items. But there was one skirt in particular that has been rescued from my give-away pile again and again. Paige gave me her expert New York fashionista opinion (she has great taste!) and said it had to go: it's too hippie, outdated, and has hideous tufts of tulle along the bottom. :( But this skirt, once the object of my affection that I saved and saved for and ended up splurging on from urbanoutfitters.com, is my equivalent of a blankie. So I thought it deserved at least one more test drive:

My verdict? It stays! I think it chimes in well with fashion's "Summer of Love" revival. Boho-chic/woho-chic/boho-rock/boho-who-knows? I love it! And in case you were wondering...

Fedora, cami, flip-flops: Ann Taylor Loft

Skirt, vest: Urban Outfitters
Locket: vintage

Paige seemed to enjoy helping me reorganize and reevaluate my wardrobe. And she wound up shopping in "Erin's Closet," too! She's been gifted with quite a few flip-flops, tops, a VS Pink sweatshirt and a few Candie's purses (thanks, Paige, for helping me clean and cleaning me out!). When you go shopping in your closet, what's your favorite find?
